Field settings: the Live Summary tab

What is it?

Every supported field gets a “Live Summary” tab in its settings in the form editor. The settings on that tab change how this one field is shown in the summary: its label, a text before or after the value, whether choices show their label or their value, images for choices and CSS classes for your own styling. This page goes through all of them.

The Live Summary tab of a radio field: Summary Label, Custom CSS class, Value Prefix, Value Suffix and Show choice labels

Summary label

Show another label in the summary than the field label, for example a shorter one. Merge tags are supported. Live summary V2.0 also supports Gravity Perks Live Merge Tags in both the value as well as the label of any supported field, very useful if you have dynamic labels in your form and want to use those in the summary.

1. Find Live summary tab in the field settings

2. Enter a new label

Enter a new label for your field in the ‘Summary Label’ box

Since Pro v1.1.11 it is now also possible to use certain mergetags as the field label in the summary. You can select supported mergetags from the dropdown selector.
Value Prefix and Value Suffix
On the same tab you can add a text before and after the value of the field, for example a unit such as ” kg” after a number. Mergetags work here too. The summary label, prefix and suffix are also used in the {live_summary} merge tag since v2.2.

Show choice labels instead of values

When using choice based fields such as dropdown or radio fields, gravity forms has the option to add both a label and a value. By default the value will be shown in the summary but you can change this by using this setting. Follow the below steps.

Available since v1.1.14
This setting is only available on choice fields such as radio, checkbox and select fields. This also works for product fields using those field types.

1. Go to the field settings and open the live summary tab

Find the checkbox labeled “show choice labels” and check it.

3. Check the summary

Reload your form and pick a choice. The summary now shows the label of the choice instead of its value.

Since v2.2: with this setting on, the labels of options and shipping choices no longer include the price that Gravity Forms adds to the label, such as “(+ $10.00)”. The price is already shown by the summary when the price breakdown is on. Choice fields of add-ons such as Gravity Flow show their labels automatically, because their values are internal ids.

Show images for choices

Since v2.2 this also works with the Image Choice field of Gravity Forms itself. No extra plugin is needed for that field: skip step 1 and turn on “Show images in summary” on the Live Summary tab of the field.

1. Configure your images with Jetsloth Image Choices

Set images for your choices (Radio, checkboxes, products) using the Jetsloth Image Choices plugin. Read more about this part in the Jetsloth documentation which can be found here: https://jetsloth.com/support/gravity-forms-image-choices/getting-started/

2. Turn on images on the live summary tab

When ‘Image choices’ is turned on then you will find an extra checkbox called “Show images in summary” in the ‘live summary’ tab of the field settings.

3. Optional: Hide image label

It is possible to hide the label that shows next to the image in the summary. For this you have to add a CSS class ” gotrgf_hide_image_label ” to the live summary settings of your field. Example:

Custom CSS classes

This is a setting for advanced users only and allows you to add your own CSS classes to the field lines in the summary so you can target different lines with the same CSS.

1. Go to the field settings and open the live summary tab

Add your custom CSS class in the correct box. You can add multiple classes by separating them with a space. Example: “classname classname2”

2. Use case

Since v2.0 the plugin supports fontawesome icons. You can load any of the free fontawesome icons by adding 2 css classes to your field. First you will need to add the class “lsfa-free” which unlocks fontawesome on that field. The fontawesome library itself is only loaded when “Enable fontawesome 6 Free” is turned on in the Extra panel of the General tab in the form settings. Now you can go to fontawesome.com and choose your icon class. Adding: ” lsfa-free fa-user ” will output a user icon next to the label in the field. Read more here

Hiding options: the classes gfls-hide-option and gfls-hide-options hide one or all options of a product in the summary. See Selecting and ordering fields.
