The built-in rates

The plugin comes with the standard VAT rate of every EU country, and it uses the standard rate for the calculation. The reduced rates are shown for your information only. You can see the same list in your dashboard under Forms > Settings > EU Vat Add-On, “View default VAT rates”. These rates were checked in September 2026.

Rates change now and then. When they do, a plugin update brings the new rate, and your default country follows it automatically.

One rate for everyone: Disable variable VAT

Turn on “Disable variable VAT” in the settings of the EU VAT field and every EU customer pays the rate of your default tax country, whatever their billing country is. The reverse charge for valid VAT numbers still works as usual.

When are you allowed to charge your own rate to consumers in other EU countries? The main rules:

  • Goods you ship and digital services (such as downloads, software and online courses): you may charge your own rate as long as these sales to consumers in other EU countries stay under €10,000 a year, for all EU countries together. Above that amount every consumer pays the rate of their own country, which you declare through the One-Stop Shop (OSS). Then leave this setting off.
  • Most other services (such as consulting): the VAT of your own country usually applies, whatever the country of your customer.

These rules have exceptions, so check with your accountant which one applies to you. Selling at prices that include VAT? Read Prices include VAT for how this setting works together with it.

Change a rate or remove a country

Need a different rate, or should a country not be treated as an EU country? That takes a few lines of code. Copy the below code to the functions.php of your child theme or to your snippet plugin.

<?php
add_filter( 'gotreu_default_tax_rates', function( $rates ) {
    // Charge 9% to customers in the Netherlands.
    $rates['NL']['standard'] = 9;

    // Treat Malta as a country outside the EU: no VAT field, no VAT.
    unset( $rates['MT'] );

    return $rates;
} );

More options, like changing the rates of one form only, are in the developer docs: gotreu_default_tax_rates and gotreu_standard_vat_rate.
