Upgrading to 1.1

What is new?

Version 1.1 is fully compatible with Gravity Forms 2.5 up to and including Gravity Forms 3.x. It also brings a number of improvements:

  • The VAT is calculated on the server. The form still shows the VAT while your customer fills it in, but after submitting, the plugin calculates it again from the order. That amount is what is saved, charged and shown in your emails. Nobody can change the VAT by editing the page in their browser. Read more: How VAT is calculated
  • Updated VAT rates. Estonia 24%, Romania 21% and Slovakia 23%, plus several reduced rates. Your default country follows the rate table automatically, so there is nothing to save again.
  • Country codes. Since Gravity Forms 3.0.3 the Address field saves the country code (for example NL) instead of the name. The plugin understands both, so older entries keep working. Greek customers are handled correctly as well (GR in the address, EL for VAT).
  • Option prices in the order summary. The order summary now adds the price of product options to the line price and the subtotal, just like the amount that is charged.
  • An expired VAT validation is reported. A validated VAT number stays valid for one hour. When your customer submits later, they are asked to validate it again instead of silently being charged VAT.
  • Cleaner merge tags. The {vies:…} merge tags are empty when the customer did not validate a VAT number, instead of showing the tag itself.

What to check after updating

1. Do you reverse charge VAT numbers from your own country?

Some of you added a code snippet (from a blog post or a GitHub gist) so valid VAT numbers from your own country get the reverse charge as well. That snippet only changed the form in the browser. Because the server now calculates the VAT too, it needs a second line in PHP. Without it, the form shows the reverse charge but the entry is charged VAT, and a form with a Total field will refuse to submit. The complete snippet is in Reverse charge in your own country.

2. Do you change VAT rates with code?

Your code keeps working. The form specific version of the rates filter now works everywhere as well, see gotreu_default_tax_rates.

3. Test a submission

Submit your form once without a VAT number and once with a valid VAT number from another EU country. Open both entries and check the VAT in the order summary and in the EU VAT box on the right.

Your page cache can serve an old copy of your form. When customers see “This form has expired. Please reload the page and try again.”, clear the cache of the page with the form. See Troubleshooting.
