What is it?
In the EU, consumers pay the VAT of their own country. A German customer pays German VAT, a French customer French VAT. To know which country that is, the EU VAT field needs the billing address. Without a linked Address field, everyone pays the rate of your default tax country.
How to use it?
Add an Address field to your form and make sure its country box is not hidden. Then open the settings of the EU VAT field and select that Address field under “Select billing address field”. Save the form.

What happens automatically
- The address starts in your country. The country box of the linked Address field opens with your default tax country selected, and it is always shown, even when you hid it in the field settings.
- The rate follows the country. As soon as your customer picks another EU country, the VAT changes to the rate of that country. When a VAT number box is shown, its flag and country code change along.
- The VAT field only shows for EU countries. The plugin adds conditional logic to the VAT field for you: it shows when the billing country is one of the EU countries and hides otherwise. A hidden VAT field adds no VAT.

Your own conditional logic
You can still add your own conditional logic to the VAT field, for example to show it only for a certain product. How the plugin combines it with the EU rule depends on your rule:
- “Show” when “any” rule matches: the EU countries are added to your rules.
- Every other combination (“show” with “all”, or “hide”): your rules decide as usual, and on top of that the plugin hides the field for customers outside the EU.
Selling outside the EU
By default, customers outside the EU pay no VAT and don’t see the VAT field. Turn on “Apply VAT worldwide” in the field settings when you want to charge them the rate of your default tax country. The field then stays visible for every country; the VAT number box is only shown for EU countries.
